A heat pump, in it’s simplest explanation, is just an air conditioner that has the ability to run in reverse.  It does this by using a “reversing valve.”  So, the next time that your AC is running, go outside and place your hand over the condensing unit (the outdoor portion of your AC), and you will notice that it is kicking out hot air.

Without getting into a nerd debate about the laws of thermodynamics, just trust me that energy can neither be created nor destroyed…just transported or changed in form.  So, the heat that you feel coming out of your outdoor condensing unit is actually the heat that the air conditioner just removed from your house!  A Goodman heat pump works in just the same way.

Look, I didn’t want to insult anyone’s intelligence in the last section, but I did want to make sure that we were all on the same page before moving forward.  Next in our Goodman heat pump review, we’ll take a look at some Goodman features and specifications.  It is important to note that Goodman heat pumps offer no features that differ significantly from their competitors.  What you are buying is just the Goodman brand!  But Goodman is a good brand, with a solid industry reputation. In fact, you may be familiar with Goodman through their other brand names, Amana and Daiken.

Now look, in the first part of this Goodman heat pump review, we are going to look at a few of the more popular units.  Don’t get lost in the technical jargon!  I am only providing this to expose you to some of their features, all of which are also available from their competitors.  Although this section is meant primarily for the nerds (like you), if you are a layman, these features will also be explained in more easy-to-understand terms.  So, let’s take a look at some Goodman heat pumps:

The GSZ14 is one of Goodman’s most popular heat pumps, and our favorite (if we had to choose).

This heat pump has a reputation for reliability, and above all, it lacks the fancy features that can cause the “high-end” units to break down.  Remember, this is a machine designed to condition the air in your home…not land a rover on Mars.  Simplicity of operation is key to decreasing repair costs over the lifetime of a unit.

Look, I know what the salesmen say…”get the 18-SEER unit, and it will pay for itself through energy savings in just three years!”  Of course, if you believe that, I have a bridge to sell you on the lower east-side of Manhattan.  These heat pumps can save you money on your energy bill, but just realize that they also have more components to break down, and can be three times as expensive to fix when they do!

GSZ14 Goodman Heat Pump Features:

  • High-Efficiency Scroll Compressor – standard Goodman heat pump technology.
  • SmartShift Defrost Technology – this keeps your heat pump from freezing-up.
  • Bi-flow liquid-line filter dryer – this is standard on all heat pumps and air conditioners these days.
  • Factory-Installed Suction Line, Compressor Crankcase Heater, and High-Capacity Muffler – these all make for a better product, but just remember that this technology is pretty standard these days.  Don’t bite off on the marketing hype!
  • Copper Tube with Aluminum Fin Coil – all major brands are moving towards aluminum coils (unfortunately) because it’s cheaper to manufacture.  The downside is that a copper coil can be repaired in the field on a repair call, whereas an aluminum one cannot.  The fact that Goodman still uses copper tubes in their heat pumps is good.
  • Charged for 15′ – this means that the unit comes with enough refrigerant to charge 15-feet of refrigerant line.  This is standard.

Overall, this Goodman heat pump is a workhorse of the industry, and boasts one of the most reliable track records that we’ve come across.  Look, I know that a lot of you want to spring for that high-SEER heat pump, but just take a moment to understand that while a Ferrari is fun…it is not as reliable as a Honda Civic.  When it comes to choosing a Goodman heat pump, go with the Honda…you’ll thank us later.

For those looking for a step up from the standard GSZ14 Goodman heat pump, here’s the unit we’d recommend.  The DSZC16 provides some additional features to the GSZ14, but also maintains the reliability of a simpler unit.

Note: The “C” at the end of any Goodman unit model number denotes a “coastal” model, that features additional anti-corrosion features to protect it from the ocean environment.

Plus, at 16 SEER, it provides a little bit better energy efficiency than the standard 14 SEER Goodman heat pump.  Features not offered in the previous unit are highlighted in red; let’s take a look:

However, for those of you looking for a step up from the norm, the DSZC16 Goodman heat pump provides some useful additional features, with similar reliability to their more standard units.  It’s worth consideration, especially if you are chomping at the bit to get a unit above the base-model.

Choosing a Goodman Heat Pump – The Pros and Cons of Heat Pumps
